Enhanced Demographic Data Management Tools
Client

Year

Description
Following on the success of Kimetrica's pilot project which developed a
methodology and trial software for extracting population data, including age
and sex cohort estimates, for user-defined and non-administrative polygons,
USAID/ FEWS NET has contracted Kimetrica to develop a fully functioning
analysis tool for FEWS Net and partner staff.
The project has three main deliverables:
1.Web-based and stand-Alone DDM Tool Functionality
2.Expand the Number of Adjusted Landscan Datasets
3.Training in the use of the DDM tool and data.
The fully functioning, tested and debugged tool will include the following
elements:
Census data import and data entry functionality to allow two
different ways (from file and manual) of importing new data/updating the
demographic datasets;
Projection tool for projecting population by age and sex over
time;
Population movement tracking tool, to track refugees, IDP, and
pastoralist movements;
Security, backup and user access system to ensure that data cannot
be corrupted by unauthorized users or lost through accidents;
Simple needs estimation functionality which uses population age
and sex structure and other demographic parameters, in combination with
other standard (relief requirement estimates and norms) and user-defined
variables, to calculate the itemized needs of disaster affected populations;
Ability to make a population estimate using more than one country
dataset;
Improved, basic GIS functionality and rendering with more user
control of map outputs and more automation of shape file importation;
Ability to compare (difference image, and printed tabular matrix
by map unit) raw Landscan with adjusted Landscan database;
Ability to select areas including irregular polygons, to buffer
and estimate populations within a shape
Faster sub-group calculations so large countries, like Kenya,
process the data as fast as smaller countries (and data) such as Burundi;
Full web functionality including an attractive web interface;
Improved fully documented help files and
Multi-media Tutorial Functionality to allow online training in
demographic techniques, use of the tool, etc.
